Why We Need Dual Port Charger for Public EV Infrastructure

If you are an electric vehicle (EV) owner or someone who has considered buying an EV, there’s no doubt that you will have concerns about the availability of charging stations. Fortunately, there’s been a boom in public charging infrastructure now, with more and more businesses and municipalities installing charging stations to accommodate the ever-increasing number of EVs on the road. However, not all charging stations are created equal, and dual port Level 2 charging stations are proving to be the best option for public charging infrastructure.

What is Dual Port Level 2 Charging?

Dual port Level 2 charging is essentially a faster version of standard Level 2 charging, which is already faster than Level 1 (household) charging. Level 2 charging stations use 240 volts (compared to Level 1′s 120 volts) and can charge an EV’s battery in around 4-6 hours. Dual port charging stations have two charging ports, which not only saves space but also allows two EVs to charge simultaneously without sacrificing charging speed.


Why Dual Port Level 2 Charging Stations are Essential for Public Charging Infrastructure?

Although Level 1 charging stations can be found in many public places, they are not practical for regular use as they are too slow to adequately charge an EV. Level 2 charging stations are far more practical, with a charging time that is significantly faster than Level 1, making them more suitable for public charging facilities. However, there are still disadvantages to a single port Level 2 charging station, including the potential for a long waiting time for other drivers. This is where dual port Level 2 charging stations come into play, allowing two EVs to charge simultaneously without sacrificing charging speed.


Advantages of Dual Port Level 2 Charging Stations

There are several advantages to choosing a dual port Level 2 charging station over single port or lower-level charging units:

-Dual ports save space, making them more practical for public charging infrastructure, especially in areas where space is limited.

-Two vehicles can charge simultaneously, lessening the potential wait time for drivers waiting for a charging spot.

-The charging time for each vehicle is the same as it would be for a single port charging station, allowing each driver to get a full charge in a reasonable amount of time.

-More charging ports in one location mean fewer charging stations need to be installed overall, which can be cost-effective for businesses and municipalities.
